Day 1 - Podfic 101/Why We Podfic
Welcome to the first day of pod_aware!

To post a work for pod_aware, please include the following in your notes or somewhere easily visible to help spread awareness about podfic:

Podfic: it's an audio recording of a fanfic, like an audiobook, how awesome is that? Fans from all over put their voices out there so you can enjoy fanfic on the go or just in a different way. To find out more about podfic, why we do it and how to get started, check out pod_aware on LJ or DW.

To make it easier for you, you can just copy and past from here:

To help get us in the mindset, here's a podcast done by bessyboo, podklb and myself, where we talk about podfic 101 and why we podfic:

Download: MP3 or M4B

Feel free to talk about today's theme in the comments and if you post pod_aware stuff off the comm, make sure to drop us a link so we can add you to the round up post!

I'm really new to podfic so I don't have anything too exciting to share XD

But I'll probablly post a recc or something to my journal each day this week and link back here <3

That's awesome! Really, things don't have to be podfic related. I just want people to do what they're most comfortable with while highlighting podfic. So whatever you're comfortable with will be most welcome :D

I really enjoyed listening to this! Everyone has such different reasons for getting into podfic, and at very different times; it's quite interesting to hear about.

What podklb was saying about the idiosyncratic ways people respond to podfic really resonated with me. I'm one of those people who is constantly worried about how I sound and looking for ways to improve both my reading and the more technical aspects --I don't think that'll ever change, but it's pretty reassuring to think that one's recording, no matter what, is always going to affect people differently.

I loved listening to this! Thank you so much for letting us eavesdrop on this conversation. So interesting to hear about the how's and why's for each of you, and I enjoyed listening to it while cooking dinner and knitting fingerless mittens!!

I couldn't always tell you three apart (which adds credence to what you all said about not being recognizable) even though I know klb's work really well and thought for sure I'd always know her voice amongst you. I found I did not!), and so I am not sure which of you highlighted being read to throughout your life as one of life's pleasures, as a way of being nurtured and cared for. But that resonated with me quite a bit. I read aloud to my children everyday, and it is probably my favorite thing to do with them. I also make up stories and tell them while the girls are falling asleep, and I think the gift of story-telling and story-sharing is it's own art, whether you thought it up or are reading someone else's work. I would love to be read to... I DO love it! That's one of the reasons I started listening to podfic, for sure.

Hmm... I am realizing something here, friends. I know there is this issue with getting very few comments/feedback. As I am commenting here, right now, I am having the sense of wishing we could talk about my reaction, and your thoughts too... since the medium I received the info was listening/conversational from your voices to my ears. Now that I am writing a response, I actually feel a little silly, like, what am I doing writing, or thinking I can add to what they said in that totally different medium? And I wonder if something similar happens after ppl listen to a podfic. Certainly what you said about ppl listening away from their computers is a primary reason. But I wonder if it doesn't feel a little inappropriate to put into typing a response to a shared spoken listening experience?? And now I am wondering what would happen if there were technology that would allow me to click on a "comment" button at the end of a podfic that would record and save my spoken reaction at the foot of the post, just like written comments do. HMMMMMM!!!

Anyway, thank you for kicking off the week with this!! <3 to all of you!

Oh! P.S. Can one of you link me to the podfic of ddg? I found one that was just chapter one one time, but I don't think it was completed, and I'd love to hear it! Multiple versions welcome! Thanks in advance.

I am not sure which of you highlighted being read to throughout your life as one of life's pleasures, as a way of being nurtured and cared for

That was me.

And now I am wondering what would happen if there were technology that would allow me to click on a "comment" button at the end of a podfic that would record and save my spoken reaction at the foot of the post, just like written comments do.

I actually once had someone record me an audio response as feedback to one of my podfics. It was amazing and I listened to it several times. So while it's not something that has a button you could click, the technology for it does exist in a slightly more roundabout way (record, upload, post link). I think maybe on feedback day I will meta about the possibilities of audio feedback. I have that day off work, so I shouldn't have any problem fitting a little meta in :)

Can one of you link me to the podfic of ddg?

No, but I will teach you to fish. Ready?

1. Go to audiofic.jinjurly.com
2. Type "drop dead gorgeous" into the search box

The archive has pretty much everything, super-searchable, except things from the last few months.

Be warned that the DDG podfic is an abandoned WIP, though. Which didn't stop me from completely loving it. Also that the sound quality for Ch. 1 is especially unpleasant, and I have a somewhat cleaned-up version that I made for myself here.
